I have lived in Budapest my whole life, which mostly means I know the difference between the places that are good and the places that are merely near where you are standing. Ask me where to eat and you will get somewhere I actually go, not the third result on a map.

Most of what I answer is not sightseeing. It is whether a bar is about to overcharge you, which line at Keleti is the right one, what a sign in a car park means, whether the market is worth it on a Sunday, and what to do when a train is missed. The questions people are slightly embarrassed to ask are the ones worth asking a local.

I guide too, so if a day turns into something bigger than a message we can arrange that. But most of this job is answering quickly and being honest about what is not worth your time.

What people ask him

  • "We are near Parliament and want Hungarian food, not touristy, under €30."
  • "Is this bar going to overcharge us?"
  • "Can I park here or will I be fined? What does the sign say?"
  • "We missed the train to Szentendre. What now?"
  • "Is the market worth it on a Sunday?"
  • "Can you book us a table for four at eight?"

Almost none of this is in a guidebook, and all of it decides how the day goes.
