Terms of service
Last updated 18 September 2026
Reviewed against Hungarian and EU consumer law on 18 September 2026, and still not a lawyer's work. The statutes are cited so that each claim can be checked rather than taken on trust. What a Hungarian lawyer still needs to confirm: the VAT treatment of guided tours, the liability wording, and whether the activity needs a licence naming under 2001. évi CVIII. törvény az elektronikus kereskedelmi szolgáltatásokról.
Your account
An account is optional. You can book, ask us anything and come on a tour without one; it exists so you can look up what you booked without writing to us.
There is no password. We email a link that works once and expires in twenty minutes, and clicking it signs you in. That means whoever can read email at your address can reach your account, so keep your mailbox to yourself — and if you get a sign-in email you did not ask for, ignore it: without the click it does nothing, and it stops working by itself.
Accepting these terms is part of signing in, and we record which version you accepted. When they change in substance we ask again before you can carry on; an acceptance of an older version is not agreement to this one.
You can delete your account at any time from the account page. That removes the account itself along with its sessions and sign-in links. It does not remove the record of a booking you made — Hungarian accounting law requires those to be kept for the period it specifies — and it does not cancel a tour you have already booked. To cancel a tour, tell us.

What you are booking
Every tour we sell is private. The price shown is for the whole group, not per person, up to the maximum group size stated on the tour page. Tours are guided in English, Spanish or Hungarian, as agreed when you book.
Each tour page lists what is included and what is not. Unless it says otherwise, entrance tickets, meals and drinks are not included.
Booking and payment
- Payment is taken at the time of booking, in euro, through Stripe. We never see or store your card details.
- Your booking is confirmed when payment succeeds and you receive a confirmation email with a booking reference.
- Each tour has a minimum notice period, shown on its page — 24, 48 or 72 hours depending on the tour.
- If a time is taken while you are paying, we will not charge you; if a charge has already been taken we refund it in full.
Changing your booking
Tell us at least 24 hours before the start time and we will move your tour to another date free of charge, subject to a guide being available. Ask by replying to your confirmation email or by WhatsApp.
The 14-day cooling-off period, and why you do not get one
There is no 14-day right of withdrawal on a tour booked for a particular date. That is not our choice and not a term we wrote:45/2014. (II. 26.) Korm. rendelet 29. § (1) l) takes leisure services out of the withdrawal right when the contract fixes a date or a deadline, in the same breath as accommodation, transport, car hire and catering. A guided tour at 10:00 on the fourteenth is exactly that.
We are telling you here, plainly and before you book, because45/2014. (II. 26.) Korm. rendelet 11. § (1) l) requires it — and because a trader who does not tell you loses the exemption and owes you the full fourteen days anyway. The same sentence appears on the booking form itself, where the decision is actually made.
What you do get instead is below, and it is more generous than the law obliges us to be: free rescheduling and a full refund up to 24 hours before, and a full refund whenever we are the ones who cannot go ahead.
Cancellation
- More than 24 hours before the tour: full refund.
- Less than 24 hours before: we cannot refund the booking, because the guide's day is already committed.
- If we cancel: full refund, or another date, whichever you prefer.
Refunds go back to the card you paid with and usually take 5–10 working days.
Weather
These are walking tours and they run in most weather. If conditions make a tour genuinely unsafe we will contact you to reschedule or refund. Rain alone is not usually a reason to cancel — we will adapt the route and spend more time indoors.
Not turning up
If you are running late, call or message us — we will wait as long as we reasonably can. If nobody arrives within 30 minutes of the start time and we have not heard from you, the tour is treated as used and cannot be refunded.
Your responsibilities
- Wear shoes you can walk in. Buda's streets are cobbled and hilly.
- Tell us in advance about mobility needs, dietary requirements or medical conditions that affect the day, so we can plan a route that works.
- Children are welcome and must be accompanied by an adult throughout.
- We may end a tour without refund if behaviour puts the guide or others at risk.
Walks Local
Walks Local is separate from a tour. You are buying access to a named local for the dates of your stay: you can message them and they answer. It is priced per night, the way a hotel is, and the price is for the whole party rather than per person.
What we promise, and what we do not
We publish two things on the sales page and on your local's profile, and they are the promise: the hours they answer, and how quickly. Outside those hours they pick your message up at the start of the next one. We do not offer a round-the-clock service and we would rather say so than claim one and miss it.
Walks Local is not an emergency service. In an emergency call 112, which is free from any phone in Hungary and is answered in English. Your local can help you afterwards — finding a pharmacy, explaining a form, telling you where the police station is — but never instead of the emergency services, and never in a way that should delay you calling them.
What your local gives you is an opinion, not a guarantee. A restaurant recommendation is a recommendation; a comment on whether somewhere is reasonably priced is a judgement. We are not responsible for what a third party you were pointed towards then does, though we would very much like to hear about it if it went badly, because it affects what we recommend next.
Walks Local does not include anyone coming out to meet you. If you want company in person, that is a private tour and it is booked separately, at the prices on the tour pages.
If we miss our own promise
If your local does not answer within the published hours and you were left waiting materially longer than the stated response time, tell us and we will credit you the days affected. If it happens repeatedly we will refund the remainder of your stay in full and stop charging you. We measure our own response times, so you do not have to prove it.
Cancelling
- Before it starts: cancel any time up to the day before your arrival for a full refund.
- Once it has started: we refund the nights you have not used.
- If we cannot staff your dates after you have paid, we refund in full and tell you as soon as we know.
Messages
Conversations happen on WhatsApp and we keep a copy, so that your local can see what you have already told them and so that we can measure how quickly we answer. We delete the conversation and your contact details shortly after your trip ends — the detail is in theprivacy policy. Please do not send us passwords, card numbers or copies of identity documents; we do not need them and we would rather not hold them.
We may end an engagement without refund if someone is abusive or threatening towards a local. That is the only circumstance in which we would.
Your fourteen days, which you do keep here
Walks Local is not a tour on a fixed date, so unlike the tours it isnot inside the 45/2014. (II. 26.) Korm. rendelet 29. § (1) l) exemption. You have the ordinary fourteen-day right of withdrawal, counted from the purchase, and to use it you only have to write to us. No form, no reason.
If your stay begins inside those fourteen days, we cannot start without you asking us to. The purchase page asks for exactly that — an express request that we begin early, together with an acknowledgement that once the service has been performed in full the right is over. That is 13. § and 19. § of the same decree, and without both we would owe you the full fourteen days whatever the page said.
Withdraw after we have started at your request and you pay for the days already used, pro rata, and we refund the rest.
Still open for a lawyer: the VAT treatment of a per-night advisory service sold to a consumer who is physically in Hungary.
Liability
You take part in our tours at your own risk and are responsible for your own belongings. We are liable for damage caused by our own negligence to the extent Hungarian law provides, and we do not exclude liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence. We recommend travel insurance.
We assert no cap on our liability, because a cap that has not been drafted by a lawyer is worse than none: an unfair term in a consumer contract is void, and a void cap gives you less certainty than an honest silence.
Still open, and only the business can answer it: what professional liability insurance is carried, and its limits. Once that is known, a lawyer can say whether a limitation clause is worth having at all.
Complaints
Tell us first — most things are fixable, and quickly. Write to info@walksofbudapest.com, use the form on the contact page, or call +36 70 416 2701.
A complaint sent through the form on this site is acknowledged by email immediately and automatically. We answer in substance, in writing, within 30 days of receiving it. If we reject it we say why, and we tell you which body you can take it to next.
Please include your name, your address and your email address. Without them we may not be able to handle a spoken complaint as a written one — which is the difference between an answer you can rely on and a conversation.
We keep complaints and our answers to them for 3 years, as 1997. évi CLV. törvény 17/A–17/B. § requires.
If we cannot agree
You can take a consumer dispute to a conciliation board, free of charge, without a lawyer. We are obliged to take part in the procedure.
The board competent for the business is:
- Name
- Budapesti Békéltető Testület
- Operated by
- Budapesti Kereskedelmi és Iparkamara
- Seat
- 1016 Budapest, Krisztina krt. 99. I. em. 111.
- Post
- 1253 Budapest, Pf.: 10.
- Telephone
- +36 1 488 2131
You may instead use the board where you live or are staying. There is one in every county — the full list is here.
A board's decision binds us up to 250,000 Ft where we have made a declaration of submission or the law makes it binding. The threshold rose from 200,000 Ft on 23 July 2025.
You can also complain to the consumer protection authority — in Hungary the competent county government office (find yours), or the national office at nkfh.gov.hu. And you can go to court.
The European Commission's online dispute resolution platform is not mentioned here because it no longer exists: Regulation (EU) 2024/3228 closed it on 20 July 2025 and required traders to remove their links to it.
Which law applies
Hungarian law governs these terms — principally 2013. évi V. törvény a Polgári Törvénykönyvről, 1997. évi CLV. törvény a fogyasztóvédelemről and 45/2014. (II. 26.) Korm. rendelet a fogyasztó és a vállalkozás közötti szerződések részletes szabályairól.
If you are a consumer living in another EU country, nothing here takes away the protection your own country's consumer law gives you. Where the two differ, whichever is better for you applies.
These terms, and changes to them
The version that applies to your booking is the one published when you booked. We keep a record of which version each account accepted and when, and when we change these terms in substance we ask you to accept the new version before you carry on — we do not treat silence as agreement.
