Why it's worth going

Exhibitions on this scale rarely come to Central Europe, and this one runs right through the Christmas season. It is the obvious plan for a cold or wet day.

What to expect

The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 18:00, with last entry at 17:00, and is closed on Mondays. Weekend afternoons are the busiest. It stands on Heroes' Square at the end of Andrássy út, by the M1 metro, and the City Park ice rink is a few minutes' walk behind it.

Bonjour Monsieur Gauguin follows Paul Gauguin from Paris and Brittany to Martinique, Tahiti and the Marquesas, and hangs him alongside the painters he worked with and against: Courbet, Pissarro, Monet, Cézanne and van Gogh. The museum calls it the first large-scale Gauguin exhibition in Hungary, with about 150 works in all, around 80 of them by Gauguin, borrowed from more than forty institutions, including exceptional loans from the Musée d'Orsay. It runs from 30 October 2026 to 28 February 2027. Full-price tickets are 6,800 HUF on weekdays and 7,800 HUF at weekends; reduced tickets are 3,400 and 3,900 HUF. Allow about an hour and a half.
