Why it's worth going
A period-instrument Messiah from ensembles of this standard, in a hall built for its acoustics, is a proper Advent concert rather than a tourist one.
What to expect
Müpa stands on the Pest bank of the Danube by Rákóczi Bridge. Tram 2 runs from the centre along the river to the Müpa – Nemzeti Színház stop at the door; allow about twenty minutes.
Two of Germany's leading early-music ensembles bring Handel's Messiah to Müpa's Béla Bartók National Concert Hall for one night: the RIAS Kammerchor and the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, conducted by Justin Doyle, with the soloists Julia Doyle, Tim Mead, Thomas Hobbs and Roderick Williams. The concert runs from 19:30 to about 22:25, with one interval. Tickets cost 7,200–25,900 HUF; Müpa prices its seats dynamically, so the cheaper ones go first.
