What this tour is

Three hours after dark, when Budapest does the thing it is genuinely famous for. The Parliament, the Chain Bridge, the Castle and the embankments are all lit, and the reflections double everything.

It is the most photographed the city ever looks, and the easiest to get wrong if you don’t know where to stand.

Where the light works

The Parliament from the Buda side. Everyone photographs it from the Pest embankment, from close up, where the building is too big for the frame. From across the water it fits, and the reflection comes with it.

The Chain Bridge, lit along both cables, with the Basilica dome behind it. Standing on the bridge itself is good; standing above it is better.

Fisherman’s Bastion after the ticket booths close, when the upper terraces are free and almost empty.

Gellért Hill and the Citadella for the full panorama, if the season and your legs both allow it.

The Shoes on the Danube Bank, which is a memorial rather than a view, and which we treat accordingly. Sixty pairs of iron shoes on the embankment marking the Jews shot into the river by the Arrow Cross in 1944–45. We stop there, and we say what it is.

About the start time

We start at 18:00 year-round, and Budapest’s sunset moves by nearly five hours between midwinter and midsummer — so what you get depends a lot on when you come.

November to February is the tour this is named for. The sun is down before we start, the bridges and the Parliament are lit from the first minute, and the cold off the river is part of it.

March and October are the shoulder: we begin in dusk and the lights come up as we walk, which is arguably the best of it.

May to August is honestly not a night tour. At 18:00 in June the sun does not set until nearly 21:00, so this is an evening walk along the river that finishes just as the lights come on. It is a good walk and the river is beautiful — but if you have come specifically for the lit city in midsummer, tell us when you book and we will arrange a later start privately.

Practical notes

Cold. The riverside is several degrees colder than the streets, and there is usually wind on the bridges. Bring more than you think, even in spring.
Camera. A phone will do — modern night mode handles this well. A tripod helps if you have one and are serious about it.
Distance. Around 4km, including some climbing if we go up Gellért Hill.
This is not a bar crawl. We’ll point you at where to go afterwards, in District VII or on the embankment, but the tour is the city, not the drinking.

Who this suits

Anyone whose first evening is free, couples, and photographers. It also works as a second tour after a daytime walk — seeing the same buildings twice, lit and unlit, is more interesting than it sounds.
