What this tour is

Five hours on Budapest’s bath culture — the buildings, the water, and the social habit that has outlasted three empires. Budapest sits on roughly 120 thermal springs, which is why there are baths here at all, and why the city has been built around hot water since the Romans.

This is a walking tour about the baths, visiting and explaining several of them. Bathing itself is not included, because a swim needs a couple of hours and a towel rather than a guide. What you get instead is the ability to walk into any of them afterwards knowing exactly how the system works.

The four that matter

Széchenyi is the yellow neo-baroque complex in City Park, opened in 1913 and the largest medicinal bath in Europe. The outdoor pools in winter steam are the photograph everyone has seen. The indoor thermal rooms, which is where locals actually go, are quieter and hotter.

Gellért is the Art Nouveau one, finished in 1918, with the Zsolnay ceramics and the glass roof. It is attached to a hotel and feels it — grander, more expensive, less local.

Rudas is the Ottoman one. The octagonal thermal pool under the dome dates from the 1560s, and the light coming through the coloured glass in the roof is the reason to go. It runs single-sex on some weekdays and mixed at weekends — the schedule changes, so check before you plan around it.

Lukács is where Budapest goes when it does not want to see tourists. Plainer, cheaper, and covered in marble plaques left by people thanking the water for curing them.

How the bath system actually works

This is the part that saves people a bad afternoon:

• Cabin or locker. You choose when buying. A cabin is a private changing room, a locker is a locker. Cabins cost a little more and are worth it if there are two of you.
• Bring a towel or pay to hire one. Flip-flops are sensible; the floors are wet stone.
• Swimming cap is required in the lap pools, not in the thermal pools.
• Thermal pools are for sitting in, not swimming. The hot ones run around 38–40°C and twenty minutes is plenty.
• Prices vary by bath, by weekday versus weekend, and by whether you book online. We’ll give you the current numbers on the day rather than printing figures here that go stale.

Practical notes

• Admission is not included. This is a walking tour; you buy bath entry yourself, on the day or afterwards.
• Distance. Around 5km with a tram or metro hop between the Buda and Pest baths.
• Best season. Genuinely, winter. Sitting in 38°C water in a snowstorm is the whole point.
• Swimwear is required in all mixed areas.
