What this tour is

Four hours in Szentendre, a small town on the Danube Bend about 20km north of Budapest. It is the easiest day trip from the city — the HÉV suburban train takes around 40 minutes from Batthyány tér — and the one that asks least of your schedule.

Why Szentendre

Serbian families fleeing the Ottoman advance settled here in waves from the late 17th century, and built churches. Seven Orthodox churches for a town this size is the visible result, and the reason the skyline looks the way it does.

From the early 20th century it became an artists’ colony, and it still trades on that — galleries, small museums, and a main square that has been painted several thousand times.

It is genuinely pretty and it is genuinely touristy. Both are true, and the difference between a good visit and a mediocre one is knowing which streets to turn down.

What we do there

Fő tér, the main square, with the plague cross erected by the Serbian merchants’ guild in 1763.

Blagoveštenska and the other Orthodox churches — most are ticketed, several have restricted hours, and the interiors are worth one of them.

The back lanes climbing up from the square, which empty out within about two minutes’ walk of the main drag.

Getting there

The HÉV H5 from Batthyány tér runs every 10–20 minutes and takes about 40 minutes. Szentendre is outside the Budapest fare zone, so a normal city travel pass does not cover the whole journey — you need a supplement ticket for the section beyond the boundary. This catches out a lot of people; we’ll sort it.

Travel is by train unless you’d rather go by car, in which case say so when you book.

Practical notes

• Mondays. Most museums in Szentendre close on Mondays. If a specific interior matters, pick another day.
• Transport tickets are not included in the tour price.
• Cobbles and a hill. Not severe, but not flat either.
• Summer weekends are the busiest. A weekday morning is a different town.
• Pairs well with a Danube Bend extension to Visegrád or Esztergom if you have a full day rather than a half — ask and we’ll price it.

Who this suits

Anyone with a spare half day, families, and visitors who want to see a Hungarian small town without committing to the driving that Tokaj or Balaton require.
