Why it's worth going

December is when Budapest looks its best after dark: the markets stand in front of the Basilica and at the top of Váci utca, the bridges and the Parliament are lit, and the cold is exactly what mulled wine and chimney cake are for. If you can choose, come in the first half of December, before the Christmas crowds peak.

What to expect

Mulled wine, chimney cake (kürtőskalács), lángos and Hungarian crafts at both central markets. Weekday afternoons are calm; from about six in the evening and all weekend the squares fill up. Dress for standing outside, because December evenings are usually around freezing. If you would like a local to show you which stalls are worth it, our private Christmas market walk takes in both central markets in an evening.

Budapest's Christmas season starts earlier than most visitors expect. The two big markets, on Vörösmarty tér and on the square in front of St Stephen's Basilica, both open on 13 November 2026, and the city keeps going until Epiphany on 6 January. In between there are smaller fairs in the Castle District and in Óbuda, the Nutcracker at the Opera House, the open-air ice rink in City Park, the Christmas light trams, and light trails on Margaret Island and in the Botanical Garden. The practical things to know: the markets are free to walk into; the busiest evenings are Fridays, Saturdays and the four Advent Sundays; and 24 December is a short day. The Vörösmarty market closes at 14:00 that day and the Basilica market at 15:00, shops shut early and public transport thins out in the evening. Both reopen on 25 and 26 December with shorter hours. Vörösmarty stays open until 03:00 on New Year's Eve and then closes for the season; the Basilica market has one more day, on 1 January.
