What this tour is

Three hours through Budapest’s Christmas markets and the winter lighting, from late November to early January. Budapest does this well — well enough that the Vörösmarty tér market has repeatedly been ranked among Europe’s best — and it is one of the few times of year when the cold is the point rather than the problem.

The markets, and how they differ

Vörösmarty tér is the big one, and the oldest. Craft stalls with a jury that vets what can be sold, which keeps the quality up and the mass-produced tat out. Also the most crowded, particularly at weekends after 4pm.

St Stephen’s Basilica is the prettier one. Smaller, wrapped around the square in front of the Basilica, with a light projection onto the church facade that runs on a loop through the evening. There is an ice rink for children.

Deák tér and the smaller squares fill in with pop-ups that change year to year.

We take in more than one, because the difference between them is the interesting part and most visitors only see whichever is nearest their hotel.

What to eat and drink there

Forralt bor — mulled wine. Note the deposit system: you pay extra for the mug and get it back when you return it, or keep the mug. Nobody explains this and everyone is confused by it once.
Kürtőskalács, the chimney cake, made properly over coals rather than in an electric machine. We’ll show you the difference.
Tócsni or lángos, both of which are essentially fried potato or dough and both of which make sense at 2°C.
Roast meats carved to order at the bigger stalls, sold by weight — which catches people out, so we’ll tell you how to order.

Dates and timing

Markets typically run from mid-to-late November until 31 December, with the Basilica market usually continuing into the first days of January. Exact 2026 dates are set by the city and are confirmed closer to the season — we’ll have them before your date and will tell you if anything has shifted.

Book early if this is the reason for your trip. December is the busiest tourist month in Budapest, and weekend evenings in particular fill up.

Practical notes

Dress properly. Budapest in December runs around 0–5°C and the squares are exposed. Hat, gloves, warm boots — this is a standing-around tour as much as a walking one.
Cash and card are both fine at the main markets now, but smaller stalls can be cash-only.
Start time is 17:00 or 18:00, when the lights are on and before the worst of the evening crush.
The tram 2 along the Pest embankment is decorated in season and is a good end to the evening.

Who this suits

Anyone visiting between late November and early January. It is the one tour where going with someone who knows which stalls are worth it saves you real money as well as time.
