Why it's worth going
It is what people in Budapest actually do on a winter evening, and it is cheap. Under the lights, with the castle beside the ice, it is hard to beat.
What to expect
Buy tickets online to skip the queue at the desk; skates can be hired on site. Evenings and weekends are busy, weekday daytimes much less so. The rink is just behind Heroes' Square, so the Museum of Fine Arts and its Gauguin exhibition are a few minutes' walk away.
The open-air rink in City Park is the city's classic winter outing: a big sheet of ice with Vajdahunyad Castle beside it, lit up after dark. The rink's own site says the 2026/27 season starts in November, but the exact opening date had not been announced when this page was checked. Last season it opened on 30 November, the first Sunday of Advent, and closed on 1 March; the dates on this page follow the same pattern until the real ones are out. Current prices on the official site: adults 3,500 HUF off-peak and 4,500 HUF at peak times, students and pensioners 2,500 and 3,500 HUF, skate hire 3,500 HUF. Children under six skate free.
