Why it's worth going

The setting does the work. Two lit bridges, the Parliament and the castle on the hill — there are few better places in Europe to be standing at midnight.

What to expect

Street parties around Vörösmarty tér and the Erzsébet tér area from early evening, and a dense crowd on both embankments by eleven. Public transport runs through the night and is free on some lines. Restaurants sell fixed-price menus that must be booked weeks ahead; walking in on the night is not realistic in the centre. It is cold and usually damp — dress for standing outside for two hours.

Budapest does not hold one official event so much as fill up. The riverside between the Chain Bridge and the Elizabeth Bridge is where most people end up, and the view from the Buda side is better than from Pest if you are willing to climb a little. The pattern to know: the crush peaks between eleven and half past midnight, then the centre empties fast and taxis become impossible — walk for ten minutes away from the river before ordering one.

Build a day around this

Tell us you are coming for New Year's Eve in Budapest and we will build the rest of the day around it — where to be and when, somewhere good to eat nearby, and the parts of Budapest most visitors walk straight past.
